What Am I Missing?

Are you at the age that you walk into the kitchen, turn around, and think, “what did I come in here for?” If not, just wait – haha. How about the feeling you get when you leave for a trip and say to yourself, “I feel like I’m forgetting something?”
When those things happen, it’s not such a big deal. It will either come to you or it won’t. You will remember what you went in the kitchen for, albeit, probably as soon as you get comfortable on the couch, or you won’t and it will be fine. You will either realize that you actually didn’t forget to pack something or you will just purchase the item when you reach your destination (unless it’s a kid and then you’ll probably need to turn back).
What about when you feel like something is missing from your life? Have you ever felt like this? Maybe you feel like this now. If that’s not concerning enough, sometimes we feel guilty about having this thought.
I’ve been there. On the outside I looked like I had it all. I had picture-perfect relationship, lived in a beautiful home in a picturesque neighborhood, drove a luxury car, had a very successful and lucrative career, got to travel, buy whatever I wanted, ate great food, drank good wine, and got to sing with rock stars. And I did the unthinkable. I sold our house, got an apartment, asked for a divorce, moved to another state, gave up my successful career, and started a business on complete faith. Why? Because I was missing something.
I had been searching in all those things. I had been looking externally for something, anything, that would make me feel fulfilled. I would get a mindset piece “right” and then a while later, I would still feel like something was off. I’d have a great month or year in business, look at my overflowing bank account and still wonder what it was all for. I was searching for something that I didn’t know I was looking for.
Purpose.
Purpose can be illusive. It can hide. You can think you have found it in the form of a job, children, a relationship. But when there is still that nagging voice inside you, you realize that you haven’t found it yet. So, how do you find it? It can be as easy as one day you just know. Or, it can take years to figure out. I do know that I would have never found it had I stayed where I was. If I hadn’t taken chances. If I hadn’t desired change and made it happen. I also know I couldn’t have come to it on my own. I had the support of my life coach and like-minded friends at the time.
It wasn’t always easy. Some of the changes were the scariest things I’ve ever done. Did it always make sense? Hardly ever. I rarely knew the outcome when I took the step but I had faith and I learned to trust.
If you can relate to the feeling of being lost, on the hamster wheel or that every day is Groundhog Day, there is hope. Find yourself a coach, a friend, a mentor. Someone you trust to be honest without judgement. Whether you pay them or not, a commitment needs to be made, otherwise you will likely find yourself in the same place you are today, 6-months or a year from now. Questions need to be asked. Changes need to be made. Beliefs have to be challenged and energy needs to be shifted. This doesn’t happen flippantly so be ready and choose thoughtfully.
You can do it. You’re not crazy. And, you don’t need anything from the refrigerator ;)
